PRINCE2® for Beginners: What the Certification Covers and Who It’s For

PRINCE2® is one of the most famous and established project management methods in use today. It gives organisations a structured way to plan, govern, and control projects, from initiation through to completion.

For professionals who are new to project management, the Foundation certification provides an accessible introduction to how the method works in practice. It explains the principles, practices, processes, and terminology that underpin PRINCE2, while also providing a recognised starting point for further study.

In this article, we’ll look at what PRINCE2 actually covers, who the certification is designed for, and how it can support professionals beginning or developing a career in project management.

What Is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 stands for Projects In Controlled Environments. Rather than being tied to a particular industry or type of project, it provides a structured project management method that can be applied and tailored to different organisations and circumstances.

At its core, PRINCE2 provides a framework for deciding how a project should be organised, managed, monitored, and controlled. It establishes clear roles and responsibilities, keeps attention firmly on the business reasoning behind a project, and provides processes for managing work throughout the project lifecycle. The current version – PRINCE2 Project Management (Version 7) – also places increased emphasis on people management, sustainability, and digital and data management, reflecting the environments in which modern projects are delivered.

One of the key features of PRINCE2 is that it can be tailored. The intention isn’t for every organisation to manage every project in exactly the same way. Instead, the method provides an established structure that can be adapted according to factors such as the project’s size, complexity, context, and risk.

What Does PRINCE2 Foundation Cover?

Foundation is the entry level of the PRINCE2 certification pathway. There are no formal prerequisites, making it suitable for people who are new to PRINCE2 or project management more generally. The certification is designed to establish an understanding of the terminology and core components of the PRINCE2 method.

A major part of this is learning the seven principles that provide the foundation for managing a project, according to PRINCE2. These include ensuring continued business justification, learning from experience, defining clear roles and responsibilities, maintaining a focus on products, and tailoring the approach to suit the project.

Candidates also learn the seven PRINCE2 practices. These address important aspects of project management, including the business case, organisation, plans, quality, risk, issues, and progress.

Finally, the seven processes explain how PRINCE2 is used throughout the lifecycle of a project. They’re applied from the activities that take place before a project formally begins, through to managing delivery and ultimately closing the project.

Together, these elements combine to provide a structured way to understand how projects are governed and managed, while also establishing a common language that can be used by everyone involved.

Who Is PRINCE2 Foundation For?

The certification is obviously suitable for aspiring project managers, but it can also be useful for people who already contribute to projects in other capacities. Project support staff, team members, business analysts, consultants, operational managers, and other professionals who regularly work within project environments can all benefit from understanding how PRINCE2 projects operate.

For someone looking to move into project management, Foundation can provide a structured starting point. Rather than relying entirely on knowledge picked up informally through workplace experience, candidates develop an understanding of an established project management methodology and the terminology used within it.

It can also be valuable for professionals who already have practical project experience, but have never undertaken formal project management training. In these circumstances, studying PRINCE2 can help place existing experience within a recognised framework, and provide a more systematic understanding of areas such as governance, risk, planning, accountability, and project control.

Overall, Foundation is intended to establish knowledge and understanding of the method. Professionals who need to demonstrate that they can apply and tailor PRINCE2 to different project scenarios can then progress to the Practitioner level.

Foundation or Practitioner?

For beginners, the distinction between the two main PRINCE2 certification levels is pretty straightforward.

PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation (Version 7) is designed to provide an understanding of the PRINCE2 method. It establishes the knowledge and terminology required to both understand PRINCE2, then contribute effectively on a project where the method is being used.

Practitioner goes a step further. Rather than focusing primarily on understanding the method, PRINCE2® Project Management Practitioner (Version 7) emphasises applying and tailoring PRINCE2 in practical project scenarios.

Foundation is the natural starting point for newcomers. It also provides the knowledge required before progressing to Practitioner.

Professionals who want a more comprehensive understanding of PRINCE2 may ultimately choose to complete both levels, as Foundation is a pre–requisite for Practitioner. ALC Training, for example, offers Foundation and Practitioner individually, allowing participants to progress in stages, as well as a combined pathway for those looking to complete both levels.

Starting Your PRINCE2 Journey

For anyone beginning a career in project management, choosing your very first certification can be tricky. There are numerous frameworks, methodologies, and qualifications available, and the right choice will depend on your role and the type of projects you expect to work on.

PRINCE2 Foundation provides a particularly accessible starting point, because no previous PRINCE2 certification – or project management experience at all – is required. Instead, it introduces an established project management method, and provides a structured foundation that can then be developed through experience and further training.

ALC Training’s PRINCE2® Project Management (Version 7) – Foundation course is designed specifically for people who want to develop this understanding and prepare for the Foundation certification. The three-day course is available through Virtual Instructor-Led Training, face-to-face training, and eLearning, allowing participants to choose the format that suits their circumstances.

The Foundation exam itself consists of 60 multiple-choice questions, lasts 60 minutes, and is closed-book. Candidates need a score of at least 60% to pass.

For professionals who subsequently want to deepen their knowledge, the Practitioner level provides the next step, focusing more closely on applying and tailoring the method to real project scenarios.

Ultimately, PRINCE2 Foundation isn’t designed to turn someone into an experienced project manager in only three days. What it can provide, however, is a recognised framework for understanding how successful projects are structured, governed, and controlled. For beginners, that makes it an excellent, practical first step towards developing both their project management knowledge and a longer-term career in the field.
