Project management skills are valuable across almost every industry, but choosing the right certifications can be tricky. Some qualifications focus on structured governance and control, while others are designed around Agile delivery, or combine elements of both.
In Australia, professionals can choose from several internationally recognised project management pathways, each suited to different roles, organisations, and ways of working. In this guide, we’ll look at some of the main options available in 2026, including PRINCE2®, AgilePM®, and PRINCE2 Agile®, and explain how to decide which certification best fits your career.
PRINCE2 – Structured Project Management
PRINCE2® Project Management (Version 7) – Foundation is an established starting point for professionals who want to learn a structured project management method.
PRINCE2 provides a defined framework for managing projects from beginning to end. The current Version 7 covers seven principles, seven practices, and seven processes, alongside a stronger focus than before on the people involved in projects and how the method can be tailored to different situations.
Foundation introduces the terminology and structure of PRINCE2, and is suitable for both aspiring project managers and professionals who contribute to projects in other roles. There are no formal prerequisites for the Foundation certification.
Professionals who need to apply the method more extensively can progress to PRINCE2® Project Management (Version 7) – Practitioner. Practitioner builds on Foundation, and focuses on applying and tailoring PRINCE2 to specific project scenarios.
At ALC Training, Foundation is delivered over three days, while the combined Foundation and Practitioner course runs for five days. Both levels include the relevant certification exams, and Foundation is also available through online learning.
Overall, PRINCE2 is particularly well suited to professionals working in organisations that value defined governance, accountability, planning, risk management, and clear project controls.
AgilePM – A Dedicated Agile Project Management Pathway
For professionals working in environments where requirements and priorities are expected to change frequently, AgilePM® Foundation v3 provides a different approach.
AgilePM was developed by the Agile Business Consortium, in association with APMG, and provides a structured framework specifically for Agile project management. The current Version 3 combines project management discipline with Agile principles such as iterative development, collaboration, flexibility, and prioritisation. Rather than abandoning structure, AgilePM aims to provide enough governance and visibility to manage a project effectively while still allowing teams to respond quickly to change.
Foundation introduces the AgilePM framework, and is open to candidates without previous certification. It is relevant to practising and aspiring project managers, project support staff, team members, and organisations adopting Agile approaches.
Professionals who want to develop their ability to apply the framework can then progress to AgilePM® Practitioner v3. Practitioner covers the practical application of Agile techniques, including iterative development, workshops, facilitation, testing, and managing requirements.
At ALC Training we offer the Foundation course over three days, Practitioner as a one-day course, or both together as a four-day program. However far you wish to go, for professionals who know they want to work primarily within Agile project environments, AgilePM provides a direct certification pathway without first requiring them to learn a separate traditional project management method.
PRINCE2 Agile – Combining Governance and Agility
Some organisations need Agile delivery while still retaining a more formal project governance structure. PRINCE2 Agile® (Version 2) – Foundation is designed for exactly that environment.
PRINCE2 Agile combines the governance and project management structure of PRINCE2 with Agile concepts, frameworks, and techniques. These include approaches such as Scrum, Kanban, and Lean Startup.
The aim is to allow Agile delivery methods to operate within a clearly defined project management environment. PRINCE2 provides structure around areas such as project direction and management, while Agile approaches provide greater flexibility around how products are delivered.
Foundation introduces both PRINCE2 and Agile concepts, before explaining how the two can be used together. It is particularly relevant for project managers, project support professionals, and wider team members working in Agile project environments. The next level, PRINCE2 Agile® (Version 2) – Practitioner, focuses more closely on applying and tailoring the combined approach in practical scenarios.
ALC Training offers Foundation as a three-day course, and the combined Foundation and Practitioner pathway over five days. Existing PRINCE2-certified professionals may also be able to move directly into Practitioner, depending on the certification they already hold.
The choice between AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile largely comes down to the environment in which you expect to work. AgilePM provides a project management framework built specifically around Agile delivery, while PRINCE2 Agile is particularly useful where organisations want to combine Agile working methods with PRINCE2 governance.
Foundation or Practitioner?
Across these various certification pathways, the terms Foundation and Practitioner broadly reflect two different stages of learning.
Foundation courses are generally designed to establish knowledge of the framework. Candidates learn its terminology, principles, structure, and core concepts, giving them the understanding required to contribute effectively within environments where that method is being used.
Practitioner qualifications go further by testing how that knowledge is applied in realistic situations. They are therefore more appropriate for professionals who will actively manage projects, or need to tailor the framework to different circumstances.
This certainly doesn’t mean that everyone needs to progress immediately to Practitioner. Someone who regularly works alongside project teams may gain everything they need from Foundation, while an aspiring or existing project manager may benefit more from completing both levels.
It’s also worth checking the prerequisites carefully. All 3 certifications – PRINCE2, AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile – require the relevant Foundation certification before progressing through their standard Practitioner routes.

Choosing the Right Certification
If you want a broadly applicable, structured method, with clearly defined governance and project controls, PRINCE2 is a logical option. It can provide a strong foundation for professionals entering project management, as well as more experienced practitioners who want to formalise the way they manage projects.
If your work is primarily Agile, AgilePM offers a dedicated methodology that combines project structure with flexibility and iterative delivery.
PRINCE2 Agile sits neatly between the two, making it particularly relevant where formal project governance needs to coexist with Agile delivery techniques.
There are also related pathways for professionals moving beyond individual project management. ALC Training’s wider portfolio includes qualifications covering program and portfolio management, project offices, benefits management, and other areas that may become relevant as responsibilities develop.
The training format involved is another practical consideration. We offer many of our project management certifications through both virtual training and face-to-face courses. Certification exam vouchers are also included with the relevant courses, along with course materials and practice examinations.
The best starting point is to consider the type of projects you currently work on, how your organisation approaches delivery, and where you want your career to go next. A Foundation certification can provide the initial structure and terminology, while Practitioner training allows you to develop the ability to apply that framework in more demanding project environments.
With PRINCE2 Version 7, AgilePM v3, and PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 all now available, professionals in Australia have multiple well-defined certification routes to choose from in 2026. Ultimately, the right one will be the pathway that most closely matches the way you expect to actually manage projects in practice.
