The Key Differences Between ITIL Version 4 and ITIL Version 5

ITIL has long been seen as a global benchmark for best practices in IT service management. With the introduction of ITIL (Version 5), this framework has evolved once more to reflect the realities of modern-day organisations. Rather than reinventing the fundamentals, Version 5 builds on the foundations established by ITIL 4, while still introducing notable changes in emphasis, structure, and assessment.

In this article, we’ll explain the key changes between ITIL 4 and ITIL (Version 5). We’ll cover the differences in scope, learning pathways, assessment formats and more, along with the overall positioning shift to suit the current digital environment.

Expanding the Scope of ITIL

One of the biggest shifts in ITIL (Version 5) is an expanded focus beyond traditional IT service management, towards explicitly ‘digital’ products and service management. While ITIL 4 did address these, Version 5 places a notably stronger emphasis on managing digital products, services and the user experience, all within an integrated whole.

Version 5 positions ITIL as relevant not only to IT operations teams, but to a wider range of organisational roles also involved in delivering digital outcomes. There’s a heavy emphasis on collaboration between teams and greater clarity and understanding for stakeholders, rather than digital products being managed in isolated operations.

This broader scope now aligns ITIL with modern operating models, in which the customer experience, service performance and product delivery are closely connected. By explicitly linking service management with both digital products and organisational-level benefits, ITIL (Version 5) strengthens its status as a framework for end-to-end digital delivery, rather than simply IT service management.

A New AI-Native Focus

ITIL (Version 5) places significantly more emphasis on operating within AI-enabled and automated environments. Per the official guidance, the framework is described as ‘AI-native by design’, reflecting the growing role of AI systems in modern service and product delivery.

Rather than simply treating automation as an operational enhancement, Version 5 positions AI as a key factor that directly affects governance, decision-making and services. This is reflected in the introduction of AI Governance as an extension module, clearly recognising the need for structured oversight of AI-driven services and organisational systems.

Also highlighted is the increasing organisational complexity driven by automation and data-driven operations. ITIL (Version 5) places a stronger emphasis on helping professionals manage risk, accountability and performance, all in environments where decisions may be partially automated. In doing so, the framework clearly acknowledges AI as already being a core component of digital service management, rather than an emerging or optional consideration.

Greater Emphasis on Real-World Application

Another notable shift in ITIL (Version 5) is a stronger emphasis on real-world application. The updated framework is repeatedly framed as being ‘practical’, with guidance to help professionals actually translate their strategies into measurable results.

While ITIL has always provided structured best practice guidance, Version 5 places an increased focus on how those practices are applied within real organisational environments. The updated qualification structure incorporates clearly-defined pathways – Practice Manager, Managing Professional, and Strategic Leader – and the continued focus on ITIL practices, supported by structured access through PeopleCert Plus, further reflects an emphasis on practical implementation, rather than just conceptual guidance.

Overall, this positions ITIL (Version 5) as supporting practical and confident execution, helping organisations move from defined processes to demonstrable delivery across their digital products and services.

Updated Qualification Structure

ITIL (Version 5) introduces an updated qualification scheme organised around clearly defined pathways. The journey still begins with ITIL Foundation, which remains the entry point into the framework. Beyond Foundation though, the qualification structure is organised into three distinct ‘streams’:

Candidates may pursue one or more of these pathways, though each shares the ITIL Transformation core module, which only needs to be completed once. Completing all three pathways earns the fourth and highest recognition of all, ITIL Master. This is a clear indicator that you possess both deep expertise and the proven ability to adopt ITIL in practical, real-world situations.

Exam Format Changes

ITIL (Version 5) will also see changes to the actual assessment formats across the scheme.

The ITIL Foundation and Practice certifications will continue to use closed-book, multiple-choice examinations. Several advanced qualifications, however including ITIL Product, Service, Experience, Strategy, and Transformation will likely adopt an open-book format.

This will shift the emphasis from simple memorisation to the actual understanding and application of concepts. Candidates will also need to show that they can make informed decisions based on their learning, which again, reflects the increased focus on practical, real-world usage.

Preparing for What Comes Next

ITIL continues to evolve alongside the ways in which organisations deliver technology-based services. Version 5 doesn’t replace established best practices. Instead it builds on these foundations while introducing updated structures and concepts and shifting the emphasis, to better reflect today’s digital, data-driven, AI-incorporated environments.

For professionals already working with ITIL, understanding these changes early helps to ensure your skills remain relevant. Whether you’re maintaining existing credentials, or planning your next step, structured training can help to smooth that transition. ALC Training provides recognised ITIL (Version 5) courses which are aligned with the latest framework developments, helping both individuals and teams stay confident, capable, and prepared to meet the demands of the modern-day digital landscape.
